Hantaviren sind eine Familie von RNA-Viren (Gattung Orthohantavirus), die hauptsächlich von Nagetieren übertragen werden. Menschen infizieren sich vor allem durch das Einatmen von virusbeladenen Aerosolen aus Nagetierkot, -urin oder -speichel. Die Erkrankung manifestiert sich als eines von zwei klinischen Syndromen, je nach Virusspezies: hämorrhagisches Fieber mit renalem Syndrom (HFRS) in Eurasien oder hantavirales pulmonales Syndrom (HPS) in Amerika.

Andes-Virus, der Stamm dieses Ausbruchs

Mit der MV Hondius verknüpfte Fälle wurden vom NICD Südafrika und dem RIVM Niederlande als Andes-Orthohantavirus (ANDV) labordiagnostisch bestätigt. Andes ist das einzige Hantavirus mit dokumentierter Mensch-zu-Mensch-Übertragung — erstmals beobachtet bei Ausbrüchen in Südargentinien und Chile. Es verursacht eine schwere Form des HPS mit einer Sterblichkeit von 30–50% in publizierten Fallserien.

Symptome und Verlauf

Die Inkubationszeit beträgt 1 bis 6 Wochen (typischerweise 2 bis 4). Frühsymptome sind unspezifisch: Fieber, Müdigkeit, starke Muskelschmerzen, Kopfschmerzen, manchmal Magen-Darm-Beschwerden. Nach 4–10 Tagen kann sich die kardiopulmonale Phase rasch entwickeln, mit Husten, Atemnot, Lungenödem und kardiogenem Schock — der häufigsten Todesursache bei HPS.

Behandlung & Prävention

Es gibt keine spezifische antivirale Therapie und keinen zugelassenen Impfstoff gegen das Andes-Virus. Die Versorgung ist supportiv: Sauerstoff, mechanische Beatmung und hämodynamische Unterstützung auf einer Intensivstation. Prävention konzentriert sich auf das Vermeiden von Kontakt mit Nagetierausscheidungen und, in diesem Ausbruch, auf die Kontaktnachverfolgung von Mitreisenden und Besatzung der MV Hondius.

  • HON-US-MONITOREDUPDATE 10–11 May: All 17 US nationals evacuated from Hondius at Tenerife on 10 May 2026 on CDC/HHS repatriation flight; plane (carrying 17 Americans + 1 British US resident = 18 total) arrived early 11 May at Offutt AFB, Omaha, Nebraska. Two passengers travelled in aircraft biocontainment units: one PCR confirmed positive (HON-014, asymptomatic) taken to UNMC Nebraska Biocontainment Unit; one with mild symptoms (HON-015) taken to second RESPTC. Remaining 15 assessed at UNMC National Quarantine Unit; those without symptoms will not be formally quarantined but advised on precautions and monitored by state health departments. Seven earlier-disembarked Americans (CA, GA, TX, VA, AZ states) continue monitoring. New Jersey monitoring 2 additional flight contacts (HON-NJ-CONTACTS). CDC Level 3 emergency response.
